5 Reasons Why Greyhounds are Awesome

We adopted our ex-racing Greyhound 4 years ago and it was one of the best decisions we ever made. Greyhounds are the perfect family pet and are probably the most chilled out dogs in the world.

Despite lots of Greyhounds having a rough start to life due to their racing careers, they are so affectionate and adapt really well to being in a home. They love retirement and running for fun, instead of having to run for entertainment with the chance of being injured and then put to sleep.

Here are my top 5 reasons why Greyhounds are Awesome.

1. THEY SLEEP FOR UP TO 18 HOURS A DAY

If that's not the living the ultimate nap game, I don't know what is! People often have the misconception that Greyhounds are very active, but they are 45 mile per hour coach potatoes. Yes, they really can run that fast! Greyhounds don't run for long periods, and are sprinters, so Chloe will have a mad 5 minutes running around our garden in big circles and then have to sleep it off again. All that sleeping means that they are very low maintenance and quiet so are pretty easy to look after. Sometimes I wish I could sleep for 18 hours a day!

With all that sleeping, Greyhounds love a comfy bed, whether it is using a duvet folded up on the floor, or a luxury dog bed, your Greyhound will appreciate the comfort. During their racing career, dogs are often left to sleep in cages or outdoors on concrete or hay so the new found comfort will be like a dream come true. We're planning to buy a nice bed for Chloe in July for her birthday. We've been eyeing up the beds from "Raised By Humans" who are a new designer dog bed brand with a fresh take on design. Instead of designing monochrome or tweed beds, they create colourful beds to brighten up your dog's sleeping area. With qualities such as memory foam technologies, waterproofing and designer fabrics, Raised By Humans beds definitely stand out from other beds on the market. We love the metric design and would purchase the Large size for Chloe.

2. THEY CHATTER WHEN HAPPY

I have never seen another breed do this, but when Greyhounds are happy their jaw chatters. It was a bit of a shock the first time I saw Chloe do this, and I wondered what was wrong, but it's always nice to see her excitement and happiness. I'm not sure that I would want this to happen when I was happy though, it might be a bit embarrassing to suddenly have my jaw move and my teeth hit together. It's lovely to see her tail wagging, but with her jaw shaking we know just how happy she is to play with us and have a cuddle.

3. ZOOMIES

Seeing a Greyhound run for fun is amazing, and although we can't let Chloe off the lead due to her instinct to chase small animals (something she learnt during her 5 years of racing), she loves to run around our garden. It's so funny watching them dart in every direction, and Chloe loves running round and round in circles. We have seen her run at full speed before in an enclosed field, and I was shocked at how fast she took off. Greyhounds can go from 0-45mph in 6 strides. Pretty incredible!

Elise loves watching Chloe run around, and I'm shocked that at nearly 10 she still runs so fast. Especially when she sits and stands so slowly! There's no slowing her down and our garden has definitely suffered a bit. It's more mud than grass now, but that's a sacrifice we are willing to make as she is so happy running for fun.

4. THEY ARE EASY TO GROOM

Greyhounds have short hair and their skin isn't oily so their coat is very easy to maintain. They don't need baths very often due to their skin not being oily, and Chloe really enjoys being brushed. We were told that they don't moult but Chloe does twice a year, it's pretty minimal though and a bath and brush usually sorts it out. She doesn't have to go for a full groom though as her hair doesn't need to be trimmed. Lots of Greyhounds don't really slobber either so this is another bonus. They often clean themselves like a cat, and in general Greyhounds are very clean in general. Chloe definitely has very good manners when eating too.

5. THEY ARE GENTLE

Greyhounds are loving and gentle. We have a two and a half year old, and Chloe is so gentle with her. You do have to remember that they are large dogs, so Elise has been knocked over a few times, but she follows Elise everywhere and loves to sit (and sleep) close to her. She is also protective of Elise, and when she was small she didn't even like her Dad playing with her! My toddler and dog are the same height right now, so Elise gets plenty of nose kisses from Chloe. Chloe doesn't lick so we don't have to worry about that either. Chloe is so gentle that Elise can hold her lead when we go for a walk (as long as no small animals are around) and she is happy to walk slowly so Elise doesn't get left behind. One thing to note is that Greyhounds lean when you cuddle them. They can bend pretty far and of course if they try to do this to a young child it can make them fall over!

I have so many other reasons why Greyhounds make the perfect pet, but I'll save those for another day! If you have any questions about Greyhounds, feel free to leave them below or ask me on Twitter.

  1. I'm pretty sure I would also have no problem sleeping for 18 hours a day if I was allowed
