PLANNING OUR FIRST TRIP ABROAD

Elise is almost three now, and we have always been on holiday within the UK and haven't ventured abroad yet. This is something that we plan to do in the next few years, and we have already started planning where we might go. There's so many things to consider when going abroad with a child, from the distance, to everything you need to take, to the cost. We've researched a few places, and options, so far so I thought I'd fill you in with the things that we are taking into consideration.

FLIGHT TIME

One of the things that we have talked about the most when it comes to holidays abroad is the flight time. With a three year old, we don't feel confident going somewhere like America. I don't think I'd be able to entertain a toddler for 9-10 hours, especially on her first flight. We've been looking at places a bit closer to home, and have set a limit to 5 hours. This would be a bit more manageable, and I think we would be able to keep her entertained enough for this amount of time! We've been looking for holidays in places like Spain and France, and we have also discovered a great site called Holiday Gems who offer some amazing holiday packages. In particular, we are interested in the Holiday Gems Gran Canaria packages.

ACTIVITIES

Something that is important to us when it comes to holidays is activities. We're not a family who just want to sit on the beach, and we like exploring and trying new things. A holiday club for Elise would be great so that we can spend some quality time together as a couple, and we would love to try out some activities like scuba diving. A theme park, or waterpark near by would be great too. We've been going to Butlins since Elise was small, and they always have plenty of activities so we would want plenty of activities if we went abroad too. The reason we would like a holiday club is because we don't have much help with childcare so it will be nice to have a chance to relax for an hour or two whilst Elise has some fun with other children her age.

FOOD

Although I love trying new food, it is nice to have familiar food around when you are on holiday. We'd also love to have an all inclusive holiday as then you don't need to worry about finding somewhere to eat. I don't know if everyone is like this, but we are terrible at finding places to eat! We can never decide where we want to go, and it is always hard to find somewhere that everyone will enjoy. Especially with a toddler! We have started going all inclusive when we go to Butlins too, just because it is easier and you don't have to worry about finding a place to eat. I also think that it would actually stop us spending as much money whilst actually on holiday. With set meal times, and knowing what to expect, we wouldn't be tempted to spend lots of money on ice creams and drinks, especially as they are often included in the price too.

I think that these are the main three things we will think about when it comes to a holiday. First we need to get Elise a passport though! We will probably wait until Elise is 4 to go abroad as we want her to be able to enjoy the experience too, and create some memories. Where did you go on your first family trip abroad? Do I need to think about anything else before booking our holiday?
